Jeju West 2 Nights 3 Days Course: A Slow Seaside Trip Resting in Aewol and Hallim

A two-night, three-day trip through western Jeju works well if you stay in Aewol or Hallim and take the beaches slowly. Rather than driving all the way to the southwestern tip on day one, you rest near your lodging and spend the middle day in Hallim. Even without packing in long hikes or several paid activities, the coastal paths and forest trails show you a different side of Jeju.
Itinerary and lodging at a glance
Two nights at a single place in Aewol or Hallim.
- Day 1: Airport → meal at Mipojip in Hagwi and Jerong Cookie as a snack option → Handam or Gwakji → lodging.
- Day 2: Rest at Hyeopjae or Geumneung → Wollyeong as an option → lodging.
- Day 3: Optional short walk at Geumsan Park in Nabeup → airport. Skip it if your flight is early.
Day 1: A meal in Aewol and a short walk
On the first day, heading west from the airport, you pair a meal and a walk in Aewol. If you are looking for somewhere to eat around Hagwi, Mipojip Jeju Aewol branch is one candidate. Its official menu lists a seafood jang set meal and pot rice, and the address is 80 Gamun-dong-gil, Aewol-eup. Check the official menu and store information before visiting for what you can order and whether they are open. If you also want to pick up a snack or a gift, Jerong Cookie is another dessert candidate in Aewol.
After the meal, center your walk on either the Handam Coastal Trail or Gwakji Beach. At Handam the path runs along the shore, so it is easy to go as far as you like and turn back. If you plan to walk all the way through to Gwakji, decide first how you will get back to where you parked. On a day when you arrive late, a meal and one short walk are enough to round off the first day.
Day 2: Settle in at whichever you prefer, Hyeopjae or Geumneung
On the second day you move to Hallim. Hyeopjae and Geumneung sit right next to each other, but there is no need to spend equally long at both. Take in the view with Biyangdo in sight, then pick whichever beach is more comfortable to sit and rest at as the center of your day. Rather than taking a few photos and setting off straight for the next spot, leaving generous time for a meal and a rest makes the day far easier.
Hyeopjae Beach is listed as a place with no admission fee. Rental facilities such as parasols and platform seats, and the conditions for using the parking lot, do need to be checked separately. Also distinguish between walking the beach and swimming. If it is outside the open season, or the safety management and water-entry conditions do not allow it, leave swimming out of the itinerary.
If you have time in the afternoon, you can add the Wollyeong-ri cactus colony. Unlike the scenery you saw from the white sand, here cacti and a basalt shoreline appear together. Observe from the designated path and do not touch or pick the plants. If you have already walked enough, plan it so that dropping Wollyeong and returning to your lodging does not break up your route.
Day 3: See a forest in Aewol, then head to the airport
On the last day, keep Geumsan Park in Nabeup as a candidate for a short walk. After two days by the sea, it rounds the trip off with a walk through subtropical forest close to the village. Rather than making it the day you complete a long forest trail, decide whether to go based on the weather and your flight time. If anyone in your group has trouble with steps or wet decking, do not force it in.
Setting your route back around Aewol and Hallim lodging
If you have booked in Hallim, first check whether stopping at Geumsan Park on the last day actually fits your route to the airport. If leaving your lodging early just to see the forest feels like too much, drop Geumsan Park and leave room for a meal and returning the car. If you are staying in Aewol, let your group's energy decide whether to stay in Hallim through the evening on day two or head back before resting.
If you planned to walk both Handam and Gwakji on the first day but arrive late, keep only a short there-and-back stretch from where you parked. If the wait at the restaurant runs long, cut one of the two beaches rather than rushing through both. There is no need to lock in the order of your flight, lodging and walks around a visit to Mipojip or Jerong Cookie.
Cut back the coast in strong wind and rain
Handam and Wollyeong are both close to the sea, so do not swap one in for the other as a way to keep walking when the waves are high or the wind is strong. If outdoor plans are difficult in Hallim or Hangyeong, the indoor exhibitions at the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art are one alternative to look into. You need to check the admission fee and any closing days, and it is a weather contingency separate from nature sightseeing. Forests can carry strong-wind and heavy-rain risks too, so we do not present Geumsan Park as an unconditionally safe rainy-day course.
This itinerary is an example that assumes lodging in Aewol or Hallim and the use of a car. Check travel times against your lodging and flights, and budget by separating free walks from parking, meal and activity costs.
Separating admission fees from additional costs
| Place / item | Admission / optional cost | To check separately |
|---|---|---|
| Hyeopjae | Free admission | Parking conditions and parasol and platform seat rental fees are separate |
| Handam, Gwakji, Geumneung, Wollyeong, Geumsan Park | Open scenery, walk candidates | Do not lump places without a stated fee schedule together as free for the whole itinerary |
| Mipojip, Jerong Cookie | Optional meal and snack costs | Check whether they are open and what an order costs before visiting |
Frequently asked questions
- Do I have to visit both Hyeopjae and Geumneung? — Rather than scheduling a long stay at each beach, pick one that is comfortable to rest at as your base. You can decide whether to add the other beach after your meal and rest.
- If I walk from Handam toward Gwakji, what do I do about the car? — You need to decide first how you will get back to where you parked. If you have not settled on a way to retrieve the car, or you arrived late, a short walk back along the same path is easier.
- Do Mipojip and Jerong Cookie get visited on the same day? — They are meal and dessert candidates to look at as you pass through Aewol on the first day. Choose each one according to whether they are open, the wait, and your group's meal plans, and skip them if the day runs short.
- Can I just switch to Geumsan Park on a rainy day? — In strong wind or heavy rain, a forest may not be an alternative either. Check conditions on the ground, and when outdoor activity is difficult, choose an indoor exhibition that is open, or a rest.
