Five Golf Courses in Western Jeju: Locations and Hole Configurations

엘리시안 제주 CC 전경

Along the western axis of Jeju — that is, the route running down from the airport along Pyeonghwa-ro and Hanchang-ro — sits a cluster of golf courses with quite different characters. We have organized five of them — Elysian Jeju CC, Castlex Jeju Golf Club, Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club, Blackstone Golf & Resort and Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club — by location, number of holes, elevation and turf type.

How the golf courses are distributed across western Jeju

Western Jeju's golf courses do not follow the coastline. They sit in the mid-mountain area, centered on two axes: Pyeonghwa-ro running south from the airport, and Hanchang-ro running in toward Hallim. So even within the same "west," the administrative districts range widely — Aewol-eup in Jeju City, Hallim-eup in Jeju City, Andeok-myeon in Seogwipo City, and Saekdal-dong in Seogwipo City.

Closest to the airport is Elysian Jeju CC, at 1738-116 Pyeonghwa-ro, Aewol-eup, Jeju City, about 20 minutes from the airport by car. Continuing down the same Pyeonghwa-ro brings you to Castlex Jeju Golf Club at 1241 Pyeonghwa-ro, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo City, about 40 minutes from the airport by car. Turning off Pyeonghwa-ro toward Hallim, you find Blackstone Golf & Resort and Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club in the Geumak-ri area of Hallim-eup, Jeju City, both about 40 minutes from the airport by car.

At the far southern end of the western axis is Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club, at 100 Saekdal-dong, Seogwipo City. It is about 50 minutes from the airport by car, and because it sits just above the Jungmun Tourist Complex it is treated as the representative course of the Jungmun area, paired with Lotte Hotel Jeju. In other words, choosing a western course comes down to choosing which point to settle on along the single line running from the airport to Jungmun.

Locations and hole configurations of the five western courses

The five courses range from 18 to 36 holes. The number of holes directly affects how much play you can fit into a day and how much room there is when several groups enter the same course on the same day.

Elysian Jeju CC is a 36-hole course. It sits at an elevation of 500 m, but the terrain is enclosed by surrounding parasitic volcanic cones like a folding screen, and the turf is cool-season turfgrass. The overall yardage is short and the fairways fairly wide, so some say the difficulty is not high, though many reviews note that the greens have a good deal of slope and putting was not easy.

Castlex Jeju Golf Club is a 27-hole course at an elevation of 400 m, with Korean lawngrass. It opened in 1995 in Andeok-myeon, where Mt. Hallasan and the sea off Hallim come into view at once, and it is the course that was the first in Korea to host the Samsung World Championship, an official LPGA tour event. The stone walls and camellia landscaping at the entrance are well known and become a photo point from December to February.

Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club is a 36-hole course at an elevation of 300 m, with bentgrass. Operated by Lotte, it is a PGA-caliber course, and it is described as a low-handicap course that requires planning and practice, and as a tough course.

Blackstone Golf & Resort is a 27-hole course at an elevation of 250 m, with bentgrass. It was built on the site of a former ranch and quarry, on gentle terrain at an average elevation of 250 m, and it is surrounded entirely by Gotjawal forest. It also operates a golftel and the Blackstone Hotel Resort.

Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club is an 18-hole course, the fewest holes of the five. At an elevation of 450 m, it is surrounded by silver grass on vast grassland, and because of the nature of the grassland the slopes are gentle, so all 18 holes can be taken in at a glance from the clubhouse. The turf is cool-season turfgrass. Reviews rate the difficulty, the enjoyment and the green and fairway maintenance highly, alongside complaints that while the silver grass scenery is superb, the front desk's management of play is somewhat lacking.

What location decides when you choose a course

Location changes more than travel time. First, it decides whether you can fit in a round on your arrival day. Elysian Jeju CC, about 20 minutes from the airport by car, sits just after you enter Pyeonghwa-ro, so it is easy to attach to your first-day and last-day movements. Conversely, Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club, about 50 minutes from the airport by car, involves less travel burden when paired with an itinerary that bases you in Jungmun.

Second, the lodging area follows. Blackstone Golf & Resort operates a golftel and the Blackstone Hotel Resort, so you can gather lodging and play in one place within Hallim-eup. Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club is also in the same Geumak-ri, Hallim-eup, so splitting the two courses across two days means you do not have to change accommodation.

Third, terrain and turf change the character of the round. Blackstone Golf & Resort, on gentle terrain at an elevation of 250 m with bentgrass; Elysian Jeju CC, at an elevation of 500 m with parasitic volcanic cones enclosing it like a folding screen; and Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club, on grassland at an elevation of 450 m surrounded by silver grass — all in the same west, yet each walks differently. The one that uses Korean lawngrass among the five is Castlex Jeju Golf Club.

Fourth, there are seasonal sights. The stone walls and camellia landscaping at the entrance to Castlex Jeju Golf Club are known as a photo point from December to February, which leaves room to use the time before or after a round on a winter itinerary.

Checklist for choosing a location

Going through the items below in order narrows the five down to two or so candidates.

  • Are you fitting a round in right after landing or just before departure? — If so, Elysian Jeju CC, about 20 minutes from the airport by car, is favorable in terms of routing.
  • Are you staying in Jungmun? — If so, Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club, just above the Jungmun Tourist Complex, is in the same area.
  • Do you want lodging and play gathered in one place? — Blackstone Golf & Resort operates a golftel and a hotel resort.
  • Do you want to avoid changing accommodation between two consecutive days of play? — Blackstone Golf & Resort and Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club are both in Hallim-eup, Jeju City.
  • Do you want to leave room for up to 36 holes in a day? — The 36-hole courses are Elysian Jeju CC and Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club.
  • Do you want to keep it short at 18 holes and see the whole course with your own eyes? — Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club has 18 holes, and the entire course can be viewed from the clubhouse.
  • Are there many low-handicap players in your group? — Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club is described as a course that requires planning and practice.
  • Are you choosing by turf? — Bentgrass is at Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club and Blackstone Golf & Resort, cool-season turfgrass at Elysian Jeju CC and Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club, and Korean lawngrass at Castlex Jeju Golf Club.

How to place golf courses in a western itinerary

Because the five western courses line up from the airport to Jungmun, the simplest arrangement is to move gradually south as the days pass. Put Elysian Jeju CC, about 20 minutes from the airport by car, on the first day; Blackstone Golf & Resort or Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club in Hallim-eup, about 40 minutes from the airport by car, on the middle day; and Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club, about 50 minutes from the airport by car, at the end — that way you cut down on stretches where you double back along the same road.

If your itinerary uses only the Pyeonghwa-ro axis, one approach is to pair Elysian Jeju CC with Castlex Jeju Golf Club. The two sit on the same Pyeonghwa-ro line, and Castlex Jeju Golf Club is about 40 minutes from the airport by car. An itinerary pairing the two courses in Hallim-eup becomes a 27-hole and 18-hole combination, letting you vary the length of your rounds.

For an itinerary with a large number of people, look at the number of holes first. Course scale varies in this order: 36 holes at Elysian Jeju CC and Lotte Skyhill Jeju Country Club, 27 holes at Castlex Jeju Golf Club and Blackstone Golf & Resort, and 18 holes at Ardenhill Resort & Golf Club. Deciding the number of groups and the length of the rounds first, then matching the course to that, leaves the most room to adjust the itinerary.
