Korean Air golf bag baggage to Jeju: calculating the weight together with your suitcase

A plain golf bag and clubs packed in a hard-shell travel case

If you are bringing a golf bag and a suitcase on a Jeju golf trip, start by checking the free checked baggage conditions on your ticket. If you put only the golf bag on the scale and call your preparation done, it is easy to overlook the weight of the suitcase you will check along with it. This article is based on Korean Air domestic flights. For other airlines or itineraries connecting to international flights, check the guidance for that booking separately.

On domestic flights, check the weight of the baggage you will check together

Korean Air's official domestic fare table states a free checked baggage allowance of 20kg in Economy Class and 30kg in Prestige Class. The general baggage rules also apply to golf equipment, and an excess charge of 2,000 KRW per 1kg is stated for weight over the free allowance. Check additional benefits for preferred members separately.

When packing, it helps to write down separately the weight of the golf bag as packed for air transport and the weight of the suitcase you will check. Protective cases and covers are also part of the baggage you actually check. If the outbound and return airlines are different, record the conditions for each direction on its own line.

Check even a single club and prepare a dedicated hard case

Korean Air states that, under the Aviation Safety and Security Act, golf clubs may not be brought into the cabin even if you are carrying only one, and must be handled as checked baggage. It also advises packing them in a dedicated hard case because of the high risk of bending or damage during transport, and specifies that golf clubs not placed in a dedicated hard case are not compensated in the event of damage. The maximum transport standard for sports equipment is stated as 32kg and within 292cm for the sum of the three dimensions.

After you finish packing at home, check that the locks are closed and that the equipment does not move inside the case. Attaching a marker that lets you recognize your own bag is another way to prepare, so that you can check the exterior and the contents after collecting the golf bag and before loading it straight into a vehicle.

Do not transfer the 23kg from the piece-based concession to domestic flights

The 'one golf bag + one bag' concession on Korean Air's special baggage page is guidance based on the free allowance in number of pieces. It states that in Economy Class, when the combined weight of the two items is 23kg or less, they are counted as one piece of checked baggage. The domestic fare table, on the other hand, states the free allowance by weight (20kg in Economy Class), so when preparing a domestic ticket to Jeju, take care not to write down the 23kg from that page as your own free allowance.

In your pre-departure notes, record the actual flight, cabin class, free allowance, the golf bag weight after packing, and the weight of the suitcase you will check. If the conditions are unclear, you can pass this information on to the airline and confirm. When you also ask JejuKimPro about a local vehicle, let us know the number of golf bags and suitcases as well as the number of passengers. Passing on the number of bags in advance is a suggestion for trip preparation, not guidance that guarantees whether a particular vehicle can load them.
