If you have packed a rangefinder for your Jeju golf trip, look at its usage settings as well as its battery. In a round played under the Rules of Golf, it matters that you check what your device can do and what local rules apply to that day's competition. So that you do not prepare on the assumption that a particular Jeju golf course permits slope functions, here are the standards, set out first.
Distinguish distance information from elevation information
R&A Rule 4.3a(1) permits use that obtains information on distance or direction (for example, a rangefinder). It does not, however, permit use that measures elevation change, or that analyses information so the device tells you a line of play or a club for the position of your ball. If your product has several functions such as slope or altitude compensation, you need to check which ones are actually switched on.
Before you leave, find in your device's manual how to switch off the relevant functions. Whether there is an external switch, whether it is set from a menu, and whether the setting is kept when the device is powered on again are all items to check product by product. This article alone cannot determine that a particular model conforms to the Rules.
Check the local rules for that competition
The R&A's Model Local Rule G-5 allows a Committee to prohibit obtaining distance information with an electronic distance-measuring device during a round. So even with a device you normally use, you need to check whether the local rules of the competition you are entering impose a restriction.
If you are entering a club tournament or a separate competition on Jeju, read both the advance information sheet and the notices posted on site. Ask the organiser whether an electronic distance-measuring device may be used and which local rules apply, then share the answer you receive with your group, which helps everyone prepare to the same standard. This is something to check course by course and competition by competition; it does not mean there is a separate permission policy applying across the whole of Jeju.
Prepare so you are not setting the device up for the first time on site
Jot down a short list of things to check before the round in the notes app on your phone.
- Have I checked the conditions for using an electronic distance-measuring device in the competition I am entering?
- Do I know how to switch off the elevation measurement and club recommendation functions?
- Have I checked whether my device displays in metres or yards?
- Have I checked the manual and the charge or battery status?
Checking the units and the battery are suggestions for getting comfortable with your device. For any function whose standing under the Rules is unclear, check with the Committee for that competition before you use it. Rather than guessing from the name of a switch, describing what information actually appears on the screen will make your question clearer.
Even if your Jeju rounds run over several days, it is better not to assume that the competition information from the first day still applies the next day. Check the notices for each course you visit and each competition you enter, and put a check of your equipment settings on your travel preparation list.
